Structural Inspection and Assessment

Frankham conducted a comprehensive structural inspection and assessment of the former Dartford International Ferry Terminal, Kent

The objective was to support a business case for modifying the facility to handle marine aggregate materials for import and export. The terminal’s structure comprises an access approach, linkspan, pontoon and mooring spines (up and down river).

Our engineers inspected the access bridge, linkspan, pontoons, dolphins and berthing piles. The inspections were carried out on foot, via inspection vessel and by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) focusing on detecting defects associated with maritime structures. Frankham’s engineers also supervised divers conducting an underwater survey which included thickness measurements of the berthing piles. Following the inspections, we prepared a detailed condition report with recommended remedial repairs categorised by risk level (low, medium, high, very high), with risk parameters agreed upon with the client.

Our maritime team conducted structural analysis on each element of the facility to determine its capacity and suitability for repurposing. The team developed 3D and 2D structural models for the linkspan and jetty approach to evaluate global and local structural integrity under conveyor and traffic loads assuming the conveyor is supported on the deck.
A berthing analysis was conducted to determine berth loads in accordance with the client’s mooring procedures. A detailed structural assessment report was prepared and presented to the client including analysis methodology, outcomes and recommendations for the next stages.

As part of the scope of services, Frankham performed Principal Designer duties, which included preparing and reviewing Pre-Construction Information (PCI) at all design stages, identifying and mitigating foreseeable risks, providing essential design information to the Principal Contractor, and attending risk management meetings in compliance with CDM Regulations (2015).
