Diversity in Maritime Pledge
13th November 2024Reflections on Attending the Women in Maritime Allyship Breakfast.

Last week, members of the Infrastructure Engineering team had the pleasure of attending the Women in Maritime Allyship Breakfast by Maritime UK and hosted by DNV. This event brought together passionate voices from across the maritime industry to discuss the importance of allyship in a traditionally male-dominated field and explore practical ways to create a more inclusive environment.
The Role of Allies
Being an ally in maritime and elsewhere means actively supporting and advocating for women and other underrepresented groups in our industry. At the breakfast, we delved into how allyship can help break down barriers through mentorship opportunities, addressing unconscious bias or creating a culture where everyone feels valued. Some harrowing experiences were shared via an anonymised video and participants shared some their own experiences such as dealing with explicit calendars on vessels, it’s 2024 not 1974!
4 Steps to Allyship
- Listen and Learn: True allyship starts by understanding the unique challenges faced by women and marginalised voices in our industry.
- Amplify Voices: Use your platform to elevate the contributions of women, ensuring their ideas and perspectives are heard.
- Challenge Biases: Confronting biases, our own and those of others can create healthier and more dynamic team environments to the benefit of all.
- Mentorship and Support: Proactively mentor and support female colleagues in their professional growth and development.
Our time at the breakfast underscored our commitment to fostering a maritime sector where all voices are heard, respected, and valued. Allyship isn’t about grand gestures, it’s about the everyday actions that collectively build a more inclusive future.
