Job Summary

Frankham are seeking an ambitious and highly motivated Principal Engineer to join our Rail team, with the opportunity to support the wider Infrastructure Engineering team, which includes Maritime and Asset Management. We are looking for a dynamic engineer who will act as a technical lead, capable of taking a lead role in client management, motivated to help assist and develop engineers and graduates.

We are looking for a dynamic engineer who is technically strong, capable of taking a lead role in client management, and motivated to help assist and develop engineers and graduates.

In this role, you’ll find yourself working as part of a young, growing and enthusiastic team. This role will provide the opportunity to work on an interesting and varied portfolio of projects such as structural inspections and designs on bulk material terminals, liquid handling terminals, RoRo, data centres, flood defence walls, passenger access and much more. You will also be given opportunities to supervise construction sites, contract administration and licensing and consenting. The opportunities are varied and offer genuine prospects for career progression and Chartership (if not already obtained).

Key Responsibilities
  • Undertake the role of Technical Lead & roles related to Project Management, as required.
  • Able to operate with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Excellent time keeping and time management.
  • Willingness to take ownership of allocated tasks.
  • Act as a Line Manager.
  • Lead, support, and manage project team members, including providing technical support.
  • Mentor and develop the understanding and technical knowledge of colleagues.
  • Determine a project’s scope of works, budget and programme and assign resources accordingly.
  • Preparation of fee proposals and agreeing scopes with clients.
  • Responsible for the financial, technical and project management of various projects.
  • Supervise, check and/or approve technical reports, specifications, drawings, calculations, risk assessments and method statements.
  • Comply with varying design standards ensuring all deliverables are compliant.
  • Lead design reviews to ensure coordination between design disciplines.
  • Coordinate and ensure the production of specification and drawings are to highest standards.
  • Undertake and lead inspections, examinations and scoping visits with the client.
  • Have a good understanding of relevant Health & Safety Legislation, Codes of Practice & standards and current design methods.
  • Liaise and attend meetings with clients.
  • Assist with the promotion of the company’s capabilities to existing and prospective clients.
  • Lead and/or support in all aspects of tenders, including producing and delivering presentations.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in a civil/structural engineering role, ideally within the Rail sector and on Infrastructure projects.
  • Chartered or Incorporated is essential, with either ICE or IStructE.
  • CRE(D) experience is essential.
  • Experience of leading projects and teams with the associated financial management.
  • Extensive design experience in a range of civil engineering projects in Rail sector.
  • Proven experience of delivering projects to time and budget.
  • A good of commercial awareness, e.g., profit & loss, budgeting, contract management is desirable but not essential.
  • Experience checking and approving designs and calculations.
  • Strong experience of Eurocodes, Network Rail, Railway Group and British Standards.
  • Strong experience of Network Rail engineering assurance process and procedures.
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary design coordination and integration.
  • Working knowledge of a structural analysis software such as Tekla Tedds, Tekla Structural Designer (2D/3D frame), S-frame 3D, Robot, SuperStress, MIDAS, LUSAS etc.
  • Effective communication skills in a client facing role.
  • Proficient use of MS office-based software is essential.
  • Demonstrable line management experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of relevant CDM regulations.
