Frankham Consultancy Group were commissioned to carry out inspections on 156 bridges and walkways within the Thamesmead estate on behalf of Peabody.
Peabody was founded by pioneering philanthropist George Peabody are one of London’s oldest and largest housing providers who also deliver an extensive range of community programmes.
Thamesmead is a housing estate located in both the Royal Borough of Greenwich and Bexley. It was constructed from the mid-1960s onwards on former marshland on the south bank of the River Thames, between Woolwich and Belvedere.
Thamesmead’s urban landscape has a claim to fame for its common use in film and television sets where it features in Stanley Kubrick’s 1971 masterpiece A Clockwork Orange and more recently E4’s comic drama Misfits.
In 2018, Thamesmead celebrated its 50th anniversary. To celebrate, the Peabody Community Fund has been offering grants between £200-£2,000 to support individuals, community groups and local businesses who want to deliver activities in Thamesmead to connect the community.
Over the next 30 years, Peabody is set to deliver over £1 billion of significant improvements to housing, green spaces, waterways and economic prosperity in Thamesmead. And of course, encourage a thriving artistic and cultural scene.
What Did Frankham Do
Frankham carried out visual and principal inspections to Highways England standards to specified bridges on the estate. Visual inspections are carried out annually and principal inspections typically every 6 years depending on their age, condition and sensitivity.
2018 inspections were carried out and defect reports were prepared to highlight and specify defects that require remedial works to make-safe or preserve the life of the structures.
Frankham Engineers worked closely with Peabody and maintenance contractors to ensure that essential repairs were carried out in a practical and cost-efficient manner.
