As part of a recent urgent need to expand Maternity Services at Brighton and Sussex University Hospital NHS Trust, Frankham Consultancy Group were appointed to provide Project Management, Architectural and Mechanical & Electrical Design Services to help deliver new birthing facilities across two sites – Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, and Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath.

The Maternity Services Expansion Project involved, brief development, clinical user group consultation and NHS approvals, room data sheet development and approvals, Detail Design, Tender Documentation and on-site Project Management.

The project included the reconfiguration of existing estate accommodation to introduce new birthing pool rooms (with ensuites), standard delivery rooms (with ensuites), and the introduction of ensuites to existing delivery rooms, as part of a general upgrade to birthing facilities. The projects required comprehensive clinical consultation, whilst ensuring that HBN and HTM standards were maintained, if not bettered. The coordination and delivery of the project needed to ensure that there was no disruption to the live hospital environment. Frankham assisted with a detailed phasing plan, and project programming whilst developing the detail design. This planning needed to be consulted and coordinated in meticulous detail to ensure that the project could be built without affecting adjacent maternity, theatre and dementia services across two sites.

Frankham Project Management were also responsible for project progress meetings, contractor and estates liaison, and ensuring the decommissioning and commissioning (Infection Control, Fire, Security etc) and estates approvals were undertaken in an appropriate and timely manner.
